Stenosis of the carotid arteries is a major risk factor for stroke. Doppler ultrasonography is used to examine the lumen of the carotid artery and visualize the flow of blood through it.
What are the risk factors for carotid artery stenosis?
- Advanced age
- Hypertension
- Bruit upon vessel auscultation
- Diabetes
- Hypercholesterolemia
- Family history of stroke and/or heart disease
What information can be obtained from doppler carotid ultrasonography?
- Narrowing / blockage of the vessel lumen
- Post-surgical assessment of blood flow through the vessel
- Presence of blood clots/hematomas
- Screening for vessel dissection
